Should english field boots be skin tight at the top?

I just got a new pair of tall english field boots. I have a wide calf, so these are THE ONLY pair I could find with a wide enough calf, the only problem is that it fits everywhere except the very top, it gapes open about an inch on either side of the very top. is this ok? or should I think about having them tailored?

When the boots break in, they will drop down an inch or two, then the gap at teh top will be fartehr down your calf and they might fit better.

If they're comfortable once they break in, and they look ok when you ride in them, why bother?

If it truly is a problem with fit and comfort, then yes, have them tailored, but remeber- if you shrink the top opening, they might not fit over your calves any more to put them on! You may want to consider having a zipper put in.
Reply:They are not supposed to gape but that is a problem that a lot of people have with them when they have the wide calf ones. The current trend is for boots that fasten up the back with a zip and an elastic insert. These give a good tailored- looking fit.
Reply:No they shouldn't, they are just too tight.

Take them to the boot place, have them cut a slit on the inside of the boot and sew in *can't think of what its called now* but elastic material that gives and slides.
Reply:They should be snug at the top. I had some custom made from Tallyho Equestrian Outfitters. As custom made boots are, these are quite reasonable.
Reply:Deff. get them tailored. Boots and all show clothes, riding should all fit properly not matter what.
Reply:You should have a shoemaker put in an expandable gussett top.
Reply:they arent supposed to do that. i would have them tailored or find another pair. i dont think that it will be problematic in riding, but it might be uncomfortable. try www.doversaddlery.com or www.statelinetack.com
